The recent shooting of Russian General Vladimir Alexeyev has sparked a web of intrigue and accusations. A high-profile assassination, with fingers pointing in multiple directions, this incident has the potential to escalate tensions between Russia and Ukraine.
Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andriy Sybiha, quoted by Reuters, has categorically denied any Ukrainian involvement, suggesting it's an internal Russian matter. However, his Russian counterpart, Sergei Lavrov, paints a different picture, accusing Kyiv of orchestrating the attack to disrupt peace negotiations.
But here's where it gets controversial... Alexeyev's boss, Admiral Igor Kostyukov, head of the GRU, has been leading the Russian delegation in recent trilateral talks with Ukraine and the US. Could this attack be a message to Kostyukov, or even a warning to Russia's negotiating team?
According to the Russian Investigative Committee (SK), Korba, the alleged shooter, had at least one accomplice. Viktor Vasin has been arrested in Moscow and charged, while Zinaida Serebritskaya, believed to be involved, has fled to Ukraine.
Ukraine has previously claimed responsibility for attacks on Russian military figures. In January 2024, an Uzbek man was imprisoned for the murder of General Igor Kirillov in Moscow. Sources from Ukraine's SBU intelligence agency claimed responsibility for that attack.
And this is the part most people miss... In December 2025, another GRU officer, Lieutenant General Fanil Sarvarov, met a similar fate when an explosive device detonated under his car in Moscow. He was in charge of the armed forces' operational training department, according to the Russian SK.
