Award-winning rapper Ghetts, whose real name is Justin Clarke-Samuel, has been jailed for 12 years for the hit-and-run death of 20-year-old Yubin Tamang in north-east London. The incident occurred on Redbridge Lane East, Ilford, on October 18, 2025, when Tamang, a university student from Nepal, was struck by Clarke-Samuel's car while crossing the road. The court heard that Clarke-Samuel was driving at over 60 mph in a 30 mph zone and failed to stop at the scene. CCTV footage revealed a series of dangerous driving incidents leading up to the fatal collision, with Clarke-Samuel repeatedly veering onto the wrong side of the road and mounting the kerb. The court also learned that Clarke-Samuel had been drinking alcohol, with his blood alcohol content exceeding the legal limit. Tamang sustained catastrophic injuries and died in hospital two days later. The student's family expressed their grief and heartbreak, stating that their only child's future had been stolen. Clarke-Samuel's erratic driving, including ignoring red traffic lights and colliding with other vehicles, further emphasized the severity of the incident. The defendant's previous convictions for robbery, aggravated vehicle taking, and driving offenses added to the gravity of the situation. The Crown Prosecution Service emphasized that Clarke-Samuel was not in a fit state to drive and disregarded road users' safety. The sentence of 12 years in jail reflects the fatal consequences of his decision to drive after consuming alcohol.
