Malaysia's pharmaceutical sector is weathering the storm in the Strait of Hormuz, but the industry is on high alert. The Health Ministry's proactive measures, including mandatory reporting of medicine supply disruptions, have been pivotal in maintaining stability. This system, which came into effect on July 1, mandates Product Registration Holders to notify authorities of any disruptions or discontinuations, allowing for swift risk assessment and response.
Despite the ongoing tensions, the industry reports no widespread shortages or major production interruptions. However, manufacturers are closely monitoring the availability, lead times, and costs of imported active pharmaceutical ingredients, packaging materials, and logistics services. The Strait of Hormuz situation has heightened concerns about increased procurement costs due to higher freight, fuel, and insurance expenses, shipment rerouting, and longer delivery times.
Ch'ng Kien Peng, president of the Malaysian Organisation of Pharmaceutical Industries, acknowledges the potential for higher costs but emphasizes that this may not uniformly translate to higher medicine prices. Malaysia's pharmaceutical supply chain boasts strengths such as local manufacturing capabilities, diversified international sourcing, and inventory buffers. Yet, the country is not entirely immune to prolonged global disruptions, as local manufacturers still rely on specialized packaging and production inputs.
The Strait of Hormuz, a strategic waterway, remains closed due to renewed tensions with the United States, affecting approximately 106 types of products imported by Malaysia, from crude oil to raw materials for plastic items and food products like dates and pistachios. While the current situation is described as relatively stable by the Malaysian Association of Pharmaceutical Suppliers (MAPS) president Lim Teng Chyuan, there have been some delays and price increases.
The effectiveness of the mandatory reporting system in monitoring potential disruptions is acknowledged by Lim, but its success hinges on the availability of alternative sources. The industry is mindful that pressure on global oil supplies could eventually raise costs, and disruptions to shipping routes may impact delivery schedules. Despite these challenges, the Malaysian Pharmacists Society president Amrahi Buang asserts that the pharmaceutical supply situation remains stable, and the public is advised not to panic.
