Feeling stuck in traffic? You're not alone! Roadworks have once again descended upon Kingsway South in Warrington, and the delays are, unfortunately, back.
Temporary traffic lights, reintroduced on Monday, are causing significant congestion. This is all part of the Kingsway Bridge Improvement Scheme, which initially kicked off back in August.
Remember the summer frustrations? Residents were vocal about the disruption caused by the temporary lights, describing them as highly disruptive. They reported that the lights brought traffic in Latchford to a standstill, with what was usually a quick 10-minute drive to the town center ballooning to a torturous one-and-a-half hours!
Following the summer complaints, the Warrington Borough Council (WBC) promised to implement measures to improve traffic flow. The next phase of the scheme began in November, wrapping up just before Christmas.
And now, we're in another phase. Utility repair and maintenance works are scheduled to last until 11:59 PM on January 30th. This comes after an order to extend road restrictions was submitted before Christmas, affecting roads like Kingsway North and South.
Since the temporary lights reappeared on Monday, motorists have been facing long queues in the Kingsway South area. On Monday evening, commuters experienced delays of up to one-and-a-half hours traveling through Latchford.
So, what exactly is this improvement scheme all about? Here's a breakdown:
- A two-way, separate cycle route on the east side of the bridge.
- Cycle improvements, including a cycle crossing at the roundabout to the north, with a cycle route west onto Farrell Street.
- Improved pedestrian paths from Farrell Street to Bridgewater Avenue.
- Shared-use services for pedestrians and cyclists at the junction south of the bridge.
- Three new crossings, including two on Kingsway North and one on Kingsway South.
- Good news for drivers: The proposals won't reduce the number of traffic lanes, so the road capacity will remain the same.
But here's where it gets controversial... While the council aims to improve infrastructure, the ongoing delays clearly frustrate residents.
