Giants' Bryce Eldridge faces a challenging journey, but he's embracing the advice of his veteran teammates: stay true to yourself. Early in spring training, Giants veterans Willy Adames and Matt Chapman shared a simple yet powerful message with the young position players: 'Be yourself.' This resonated deeply with Eldridge, who stands as one of the tallest players in the major leagues at 6-foot-7. The message from Adames and Chapman helped Eldridge feel more at ease during his second major league spring training. 'They just said, 'be yourself, don’t try to be anyone else,' Eldridge shared. 'I think that was a good message to me. If I try to do more, I'm a power guy, I'm not going to wow anyone on the basepaths. I'm going to make the plays at first. If I try to be a slap hitter or bunt, I'm going to try and be myself, not go outside of that and not compare myself to others. I think that'll keep me in a good space.'
The 21-year-old Eldridge is committed to learning and growing, less than three years after being drafted 16th overall in the 2023 amateur draft from James Madison High School in Vienna, Virginia. After his pregame routine, Eldridge spent time signing autographs for kids near the Giants dugout, showing his dedication to the sport and his fans. His major league debut last September was a learning curve, with a .107 batting average, 2 doubles, and 13 strikeouts in 10 games. However, Eldridge is determined to improve and has been working hard to refine his skills.
Manager Tony Vitello and infield instructor Ron Washington have praised Eldridge's progress. Vitello noted, 'He takes it all in. For a kid who was drafted where he was drafted and all that, he could approach things differently with his teammates and kind of be like, 'I got it,' but he seems to be wanting to soak up information. When you're like that, then people want to go to you even more, and so I think all of his teammates do a good job of looking after him and providing advice.'
Despite his talent, Eldridge's path to the major leagues is not without challenges. He has only 321 total plate appearances over 74 games at Triple-A over the past two years, and his average exit velocity during his September stint with the Giants was 95.6 mph. Eldridge's raw power and elite bat speed are recognized, but he also needs to improve his plate discipline and reduce swings and misses. Eldridge's journey is a testament to the importance of staying true to oneself in the face of expectations and challenges.
