Beyond large-scale projects, geothermal is making inroads at the local level. In New Haven, Connecticut, a geothermal energy network is underway, providing clean heating and cooling to the city's Union Station and a new public housing development. This initiative is part of a broader effort to decarbonize all municipal buildings and transportation by the end of 2030. Nearby, Yale University is also developing a geothermal loop to serve several science buildings, further solidifying the technology's presence in the state.

In June 2024, Framingham, Massachusetts, made history by launching the first utility-owned geothermal network in the United States. The Home Energy Efficiency Team (HEET) was awarded an $8.6 million grant by the U.S. Department of Energy’s Geothermal Technologies Office to expand this existing system. This project currently provides clean heating and cooling to approximately 140 residential and commercial customers.
