A significant blow for Australia! Pat Cummins has been ruled out of the T20 World Cup 2026 due to an injury, marking a major setback for the team. The Australian cricket squad has officially announced its 15-member roster for this prestigious tournament, which will unfold in India and Sri Lanka from February 7 to March 8. Mitchell Marsh, who led the team to victory in 2021, will take the helm once again. Unfortunately, Cummins has not fully recovered from a persistent back injury, and as a result, he will miss this crucial global event, as reported by the ICC website. Additionally, top-order batsman Matthew Short has also been left out of the initial selection. In their place, Ben Dwarshuis and Matthew Renshaw have been brought in as replacements.
The anticipation around the tournament raises questions about player choices: Will Sanju Samson or Ishan Kishan be the ideal fit? Greenstone Lobo weighs in on this debate regarding the best players for the T20 World Cup.
Here’s the line-up for Australia at the T20 World Cup 2026:
Mitchell Marsh (c), Xavier Bartlett, Cooper Connolly, Tim David, Ben Dwarshuis, Cameron Green, Nathan Ellis, Josh Hazlewood, Travis Head, Josh Inglis, Matthew Kuhnemann, Glenn Maxwell, Matthew Renshaw, Marcus Stoinis, Adam Zampa.
Selector Tony Dodemaide expressed confidence in the selections of Dwarshuis and Renshaw, emphasizing that both bring essential strengths to the team. "With Pat needing additional time to recuperate from his back issue, Ben is an excellent replacement who not only offers left-arm pace but also dynamic fielding skills and powerful batting late in the order. We are confident that his capability to swing the ball effectively along with his smart variations will suit the conditions we anticipate, fitting well within our overall team structure," stated Dodemaide as quoted by the ICC website.
He further praised Renshaw's recent performance and adaptability across different formats of the game. "Matt (Renshaw) has shown remarkable form recently, excelling in various roles in white-ball formats for Australia, as well as for the Queensland Bulls and the Brisbane Heat. With our top order solidified and expecting spin-heavy conditions during the initial stages in Sri Lanka, we believe Matt will provide valuable middle-order support, especially as Tim David works through his return-to-play protocol early in the tournament," Dodemaide added.
Australia finds itself in Group B alongside Ireland, Zimbabwe, Sri Lanka, and Oman. Their journey in the World Cup will kick off against Ireland on February 11 at the R Premadasa Stadium in Colombo.
