Imagine a small-town movie theater stirring up a national controversy with just a few witty words on its marquee. That’s exactly what happened in Lake Oswego, Oregon, when the Lake Theater & Café decided to get creative while promoting Melania, Amazon Studios’ documentary about former First Lady Melania Trump. But here’s where it gets controversial: Amazon swiftly pulled the film from the theater’s lineup after taking issue with the marquee’s playful—yet provocative—messages.
The theater’s manager, Jordan Perry, had hoped to inject some humor into a slow week at the box office. Among the marquee’s quips were, “Does Melania wear Prada? Find out Friday!” and a cheeky twist on Sun Tzu’s wisdom: “To defeat your enemy, you must know them. Melania.” Directed by Brett Ratner, the documentary chronicles the 20 days leading up to Donald Trump’s second inauguration. Amazon had acquired the film’s rights for a staggering $40 million in 2025, making its sudden removal all the more surprising.
According to Perry, Amazon wasn’t amused. “The studio was not happy and/or did not appreciate my take on marketing their film to our own public,” he told The Oregonian. The marquee was promptly updated with a tongue-in-cheek response: “Amazon called. Our marquee made them mad. All *Melania showings cancelled. Show your support at Whole Foods instead. But this is the part most people miss: Perry insists the decision to screen Melania wasn’t a political statement. In a blog post, he explained it was meant to be a humorous choice for a slow week, asking, “Wouldn’t it be exponentially weirder, to the point of being funny, to show *Melania here, at your obviously anti-establishment, occasionally troublemaking, neighborhood cinema?”*
Despite the theater’s playful intent, the fallout was real. Local patrons had already questioned why the film was being shown, and Amazon Studios declined to comment on the matter. Was Amazon overreacting, or did the theater cross a line? And does a documentary about a public figure deserve such sensitive handling? Let us know your thoughts in the comments—this debate is far from over.
